Spring/Summer 2018

An idea from the past, technology from the future.

BOOST YOU WEAR LVL 1

BYW or “Boost You Wear” was born from the clash of collective adidas memories of the 90’s with the latest of the brand’s technology. As part of the adidas Originals design team, my role was to design footwear that would capture the spirit of the “Feet You Wear” shoes of the 90s, but bring them into the future with BOOST technology into a silhouette that would stand out in our customers'' closets.

As an inventor/problem solver at heart, i challenged myself to also include functional features and references that would keep the integrity of natural movement and human anatomy that the original FYW product had.

Past empowers future…

The process began with analyzing the adidas archive of Feet You Wear shoes, from tennis to training and basketball. What i looked for were patterns of shape, stance, visual language, design details, and function that would trigger memories of the Feet You Wear.

EXPLORE

Initial exploration was done as a team, riffing off each other’s ideas and building upon them. This is a small selection of my early thoughts and process.

Process

My process is pretty fluid based on the project needs. I enjoy working with my hands as much as digitally so I often bounce in between sketching and hand sculpting, especially when figuring out complex geometry or understanding how shapes will feel under foot.

PROTOTYPING

First factory trip for the team and I and it was a fast paced time for quick decisions.

FINAL THOUGHTS…

I had never worked at such a fast pace as my first factory trip. Each day was a set of quick decisions. By the last day of our 10 day trip, I realized how much effort and collaboration it took to make a product, from factory workers, engineers, and designers. I also was intrigued at the manufacturing process and technical problems that were challenging and interesting to solve.
